NAEP Test Scores

Lost in Math. You are not alone.
66% of 8th-grade students are not proficient in math.
66% of 8th-grade students are not proficient in reading.
The latest NAEP scores show that students are not getting any better.  Many students are regressing in readiness. What can we do to reverse the trend of stagnation? Teachers and schools are not to blame, but the progressive policymakers who have never been in the classroom are.

Only 35% of 4th graders are proficient or above in reading. Also, a child rated as proficient in reading does not mean the child is reading on grade level, warns the NAEP. It is the same story in math--only 41% of 4th graders reach the proficiency cut scores. Again, a student who is rated as proficient does not mean the student is doing the math on grade-level. Indeed, kids are poorly trained for college-level work. And many blame Common Core and state standards that are primarily based on CC. Betsy DeVos slammed the K-12 education establishment for allowing students to fall behind in math and reading (Newsweek). I blame the reform math curriculum, along with faulty or inefficient math instruction (the teaching) that often conflicts with cognitive science. Teachers are not teaching conventional arithmetic; they are teaching reform math leftover from the failed 1989 NCTM math standards, which, unfortunately, were resurrected via CC. 

The K-5 Teacher Conundrum 
Elementary school teachers tell me that they have to teach many of the strategies because they are on the state test and in materials they are told to use. Where are the standard algorithms?

Standard Algorithms Are Not a Priority
Memorization and Drill Are Downgraded 
"For each of the four multi-digit operations, the Common Core standards ask students to practice multiple strategies for one year or two before learning the standard algorithm," writes Eric A. Nelson ("Cognitive Science and the Common Core Mathematics Standards"). The strategies crowd the curriculum, along with a bunch of other stuff, such as the eight standards for mathematical practice, social-emotional learning, self-esteem and mindfulness activities, and lots of group work (e.g., discovery learning, project-based learning, and so on). The consequence has been to downgrade the importance of the standard algorithms. "Students are taught under math standards that discouraged initial memorization for math topics ... [thus, they] will have significant difficulty solving numeric problems in mathematics, science, and engineering." Nelson points out that U.S. 16-24-year-olds ranked dead last on a recent OECD assessment of numeracy skills among 22 developed-world nations. Nelson writes, "The CC standards do not ask students to memorize facts and procedures for some key topics and delay work with memorized fundamentals in others." 

The CC math standards do not ask students to memorize the subtraction and division facts. Furthermore, many students coming into the 4th grade and 5th grades have not mastered the multiplication facts. Teachers have been taught to decrease memorization and drill (aka practice). Doing this is contrary to the cognitive science of learning. 

The multiplication table and the standard algorithms for both multiplication and long division should have been learned no later than the 3rd grade so that students can engage in problem-solving. 

"When solving math problems of any complexity, due to Working Memory limits, students must rely almost entirely on well-memorized facts and algorithms," writes Nelson. CC does not require students to memorize half of the math facts. Subtraction and division facts are not remembered and are calculated as needed using strategies, which is a backward approach. 

Nelson writes, The 1989 NCTM standards called for "increased attention" to "reasoning" and decreased attention" to "memorizing rules and algorithms," "manipulating symbols," and "rote practice." He points out that there has been a sharp decline in student test scores in math computation.

In short, to improve student problem solving (avoiding the limits of the Working Memory), students should automate (memorize) the math facts and learn the standard procedures first, not a bunch of strategies that interfere with and downplay the standard algorithms and math facts. Why waste a couple of years of instructional time teaching strategies instead of what students must know for problem-solving: math facts and standard algorithms?   Who uses the array, lattice, or area strategies to multiply numbers? Is it any wonder that American students are behind international math benchmarks?

FYI: Incidentally, the student at the top of the page (Kailey), when she was in 7th grade, solved quadratic equations by completing the square. All 7th graders took Saxon Algebra One. Most of the children who model for my illustrations are excellent math students.

How I Shoot Photos

Commentary on shooting photos of children, teens, and young adults. Tip for aspiring young models and actors: build a resume. Also, the best way to learn digital photography is by doing it, experimenting, and making mistakes. (Please excuse the repetition.) Note: Some minor changes were made on 2-1-22. (I will continue to make minor changes and clarifications. Additions 2-12-22, 3-3-2022).

I try to take photos that get attention, reminiscent of my children's black/white photography 40 years ago for SAG agents, TV Commercial managers, and talent/modeling agents, such as headshots, composites, and modeling portfolios. 

Today, it's color images posted on a website, sent by e-mail, or downloaded to a thumb drive. Promoting the child's best features is essential because the photos are professional advertisementsEyes must be expressive. I concluded that my images were only as good as the model many decades ago. I make suggestions, but I am not a portrait-family-wedding photographer trying to get everyone to smile, etc. The model's responsibility is to perform well in front of the camera with smiles and expressions and be herself. Perk up. Never look blah or disinterested in photo shoots. Also, while I shoot a wide range of photos for modeling agents, I do not control which images an agent or manager selects for a composite. Agents will try new children, so it is important to present an upbeat, professional attitude, even at age 4 or 5.

Sharp Photos

When shooting outside, I shoot at 1/1000 second or faster with a sharp 85mm lens to keep images sharp for portraits and fashion. I set my camera to automatically adjust the shutter speed within the interval [1/1000, 1/8000], which allows the camera's computer to select the shutter speed to float in that interval. The camera also adjusts ISO. But, I set the aperture at f/2.8, or f/2.0, or even larger to isolate the model and blur the background. I also move close, filling the frame. Sometimes, if the image seems too dark, I adjust the exposure, perhaps +.3 EV. Also, I often use a Canon flash unit attached to the camera set to high speed as a fill to light the eyes.

Test Photographer (Children, Tweens, Teens, and Young Adults)

I often take more than 200 digital images in about two hours. The number of images often overwhelms parents and models when making selections. I have been willing to dump unprocessed photos onto a flash drive, so the parent and model can choose the images they want me to process, up to 6 images. But, most parents rely on my judgment. Also, parents can use the pictures I e-mail them to market the model, send to agencies for an online profile, e-mail to friends and relatives, post on Instagram or their personal website, Senior photos or have prints made, etc.


Note: I may discontinue putting hundreds of images on a thumb drive that a model or parent can take home. Parents and models can sit at my computer to select images for processing. 


The model and I exchange services. 


Light the eyes!

Some photographers say that the model should face the sun, which causes squinting. It is a terrible idea. Instead, place the model in the shade so that her back is to the sun, which means her face is on the shadow side and needs a fill that balances properly. Often, I use a Canon flash set to high speed attached to the camera when the location does not make a face light up.


See the photo below. It's not perfect, but it demonstrates how I approach shooting photos of young children. Pose the model in the shade with her back to the sun, and focus on the eyes! I have a sharp 85mm prime lens that I usually shoot at f/2.8 to blur the background. Note: In the photo below, I used f/4. Also, there was enough light reflected up from the concrete for fill. I came in close, so the camera metering nailed the scene correctly. I focused on the eyes.

Tips when photographing a child: 

Get at eye level. Focus on the eyes. Get close, filling the frame. Shoot verticals. Avoid distracting backgrounds. Shoot in the shade. Keep the model's back to the sun and use a flash set to high speed as fill. Shoot at a wide aperture such as f/2.8, even f/4, to blur the background. Outdoors, try to shoot at a high shutter speed to keep the image sharp.  


Images coming straight from the camera are okay but not great until processed. My minimal processing makes them better, not perfect. I'm not in business, and I do not photoshop photos or do makeup. Also, I am not a family portrait or wedding photographer. The digital images are huge files, so typically, I downsize them to 1000 pixels across. Parents usually let me select up to 5 or 10 of the best photos, process them, and email them, which takes about a week. Processing includes minor corrections, downsizing, cropping, sharpening. Note: Indoors, I use a painted white wall as the background to feature the model without distraction (minimalism). Richard Avedon, a famous fashion and portrait photographer, often used a white background for the same reason. Outdoors, I use lens physics (depth of field) to blur the background to isolate the model. 

Note: A well-known photographer who has written many books and articles suggests that the way to make sharp portrait photos for beginners starts with a tripod, a cable release, mirror lock-up, image stabilization turned off, etc. Really?

Let's get practical. How many photographers lug around a tripod? I don't use or recommend any of these techniques, not for beginners (or myself). In contrast, I start with a sharp 85mm lens for children, teens, and young adults, not a tripod or cable release. I use a fast shutter speed for sharpness, compose vertically, find shade, and focus on her eyes. (Image Below: Shot on 11-09-20)

If you want good outdoor portrait-like photos, use a sharp 85mm prime lens. I am older and not as steady holding the camera as I used to be, so for outdoor shoots, I set the shutter speed range to float between 1/1000 and 1/8000 for sharpness. (It is 1/3200 in this photo.) I don't own a tripod. The ISO floats to 400 in this picture. I set the aperture to f/2.8 to blur the background. Focus on the eyes. If the eyes are in focus, the perception is that the picture is in focus. Light the eyes (flash, reflector, etc. The model should not face the sun.) Get close (fill the frame). I set the White Balance to Cloudy, and I often use high-speed flash outdoors. The Canon flash is attached to the camera. My photos are not perfect. (More about posing the model concerning the sun is found below. Equipment: Canon 5D Mark iv + 85mm f/1.4L with Canon Flash 580EXII (Note: I do not own zoom lenses, just one excellent prime lens.) 6-4-21

I shoot photo illustrations for my math website in my living room with two studio flash units. The kids I had worked with have grown up in middle or high school, even college. Models needed: K-6 school-aged children; older students considered. ThinkAlgebra.org  Free Screening

Commentary
I shoot test photos for practice to keep and develop my skills. We exchange services. I do not charge fees for test photo sessions. Likewise, I do not pay models.

I use three methods to blur the outdoor background, often all three: 
1. Use a sharp telephoto [face] lens (e.g., 85mm) and 
shoot wide-open apertures (e.g., 2.8), 
2. Keep the model as far from the background as possible, and 
3. Come close to fill the frame with the model, face, 3/4.
Tip: I shoot verticals and focus on the eyes. Experiment.

The model is placed in the shade under a canopy on a chilly, sunny day in early January (2020). Pastels work! 

I positioned the model in the shade so that sunlight does not spill on the face. I set the camera (Canon 5D Mark iv) so that the shutter speed floats between [1000 and 8000] for sharpness. In this photo, it is 1/1000 of a second. I also set the camera to a wide aperture to blur the background, such as f/2.8. Like the shutter speed, the ISO floats. In this photo, the ISO = 200. I focus on the eyes. If the eyes look sharp, the image "looks" in focus (perception). The cement floor provided the fill. In this photo, no Exposure Compensation was needed (EC = 0). 

Nothing beats a toothpaste smile and glittering eyes.

Tips for young models. 

After examining thousands of my images from the past 10 years, I noticed several trends that made the model stand out. First, try to stay away from black--you don't want to blend in the background; you want to stand out! Second, avoid busy patterns that distract from your face. Third, keep your hair off your face, which is your most important asset, i.e., being photogenic. To stand out, wear bright colors, not dark, dull colors. Pastels are great, too! Also, jeans, shorts, and tops should not be baggy or loose--the camera adds pounds! You don't want that. Additionally, long dresses don't work for today's youth. Kids want to look cute, so they go short! Trendy or not, avoid ripped jeans because the rips often sidetrack attention. When I look at a photo of a model in ripped jeans, I look at the rips, not the model's face or expression. Finally, young children should avoid makeup, hair coloring, and trendy hairstyles--long and straight hair works and is changeable. When you are a teen, you may need a tad of makeup. 


Simple clothing styles are better. I look for shade, keep the sun to the model's back, and watch for light spills on the face. Busy patterns, bold stripes, and trendy styles can distract from the model, which is why I like solid colors, primary colors, pastels, and classic clothing styles. Outfits should complement, not dominate, the picture.  

 

Eye contact with the camera is important, but so is a profile shot now and then. Outdoors, I often use an on-camera Canon flash unit set to high speed to light the eyes.

I photograph most education photos in my living room using a couple of Alien Bees flash units with umbrellas against a white wall. This photo was a horizontal shot with an older 85mm lens. White balance was customized with BalanceSmarter from Lastolite.

According to Natasha Esch, photoshoots are excellent training and practice for aspiring young models (Esch, Wilhelmina's World of Child Modeling). Children who are photogenic, disciplined, outgoing, follow directions and display a range of natural expressions make the best models. (11-11-2020)

Note: The models I select are photogenic and have an attractive cuteness, a charming personality, and love being in front of the camera. They also have supportive parents. I do not pay models. We exchange services. I give gifts for birthdays, Christmas, etc.   

My Equipment is simple but expensive. I have one L lens and one camera.

Photography has always been an exciting adventure and creative outlet! However, I am only as good as the models I photograph.

My photos of children are not perfect. 
I always test the model first. Someone once said that the difference between a photograph of a person and a portrait is the outdoor background. So, pay close attention to the background. It is better to capture a fleeting expression with kids than a perfectly composed photo. In my view, the expression makes the picture. 

I shoot for expressions. I photograph headshots, fashion, assets, and skills for ports, composites, practice, and tests. For example, an asset could be long hair. A skill could be a dance leap, a cheer pose, an action shot, etc. It could be a photo of a student with a violin or flute. However, a young model's essential asset is to be photogenic, looking good in photos with good eye contact. Also, by photogenic, I do not mean perfect. All kids have imperfections.

Another asset is cooperativeness (attitude). The child should love having her picture taken. The parent must be supportive. The model's job is to help the photographer make an outstanding picture. Also, I do a lot of technical testing--test the camera, the image sharpness, the camera settings, the depth of field, the white balance, the lighting, the model, etc. Test-Test-Test!

Clothing: I like solid colors, primarily white and pastel colors. But primary colors and other colors work well, too.

I am older, so it is not easy for me to hold the camera steady like I used to. (I never use a tripod.) On the Canon 5D Mark iv camera, I can set the shutter speed to auto between [1/1000 and 1/8000]. The ISO adjusts accordingly. When I use flash outdoors as a fill, the Canon flash (580EXII) is set to high speed. I have experimented with shooting at f/1.4 for a full length (Canon 85mm f/1.4 L), and, to my surprise, the photos were sharp.

When photographing a model, I usually include several shots that imply or show action or motion, such as leaping and spinning.

Ideas to keep in mind.
1. A smidgen of lip gloss helps dry lips.
2. Your child needs a smile that would melt ice.
3. Large, expressive eyes help a lot. 
4. Children should look happy and bright in their commercial headshot.
5. Portfolio photography should show the model's assets, not sell the clothing. Thus, outfits should showcase the model's best features. Avoid busy designs, ripped jeans, or any clothing that distracts from the model. 
6. Hair is an asset, so keep it long and straight. Hair coloring or fancy hairstyles are toast. Also, keep makeup to a minimum.

You must be photogenic. 
If you are serious about getting into print work, TV commercials, and film, you must be photogenic. It is the number one requirement. For children's fashion, the most sought-after size is Girls 10. Other popular sizes are 6 to 12. Size doesn't matter that much for TV commercials or films--children, preteens, teens, etc. It depends on the role. You must relocate to where the jobs are: LA, Chicago, NYC, Miami, and other minor markets. Moreover, you should practice your craft with test shoots every couple of months. Also, your child's ability to memorize lines and follow directions is important. Finally, your child must be smart. 

My Rule: Shoot photos that make the model stand out.  

Some kids don't look good in pictures. I can't change that.

TAG & GATE Programs

Acceleration
If acceleration is not the primary focus, then there is little justification for most gifted programs. What gifted and talented kids need is acceleration, not grade-level material. Jonathan A. Plucker writes that high performing students learn much more when accelerated. Dr. Plucker is a professor at Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth and president of the National Association for Gifted Children.

Plucker takes issue with the claim that advanced programs don't work." "That's ridiculous," asserts Plucker, "but it has become increasingly common, often presented as a known fact. Advanced learning programs are effective, and we have reams of research to support that conclusion.(Dr. Plucker writes at Fordham Institute, "Do programs for advanced learners work?" 6-24-2020) 

Our best math students often go unchallenged and fend for themselves in mixed classrooms. To find talented youth requires above-grade-level testing for quantitative and verbal abilities, not grade-level testing. With a few lessons, my Teach Kids Algebra (TKA) program also shows which students grasp abstract ideas faster and better than other kids. TKA works best when students know traditional arithmetic, not reform math. My TKA culminating activities in the 1st and 2nd-grades after 6 or 7 lessons extract the best algebra students. 

Minority students are the bulk of the student population at an urban PreK-8 Title-1 school, where I volunteer as an algebra teacher for grades 1 to 4. The kids in the GATE gifted program are mostly minority children. The selection process is not transparent. Teachers are not given information on why their students made it into the program. There aren't many white kids in the school's general population, so there aren't many white kids in the GATE or gifted program, either. Each school is different. In my opinion, the GATE program, as it is implemented in the school where I volunteer, is at best a grade-level enrichment program, not an advanced learning program. Some of the students have low scores on the state test, yet they are in the GATE program. In my opinion, GATE does not work for advanced students who need a faster pace. 

TKA (2011-2021) has been a strong reaction against reform math. Kids need traditional arithmetic to learn algebra, not reform math. Sadly, today's reform math, which has been vigorously promoted by Jo Boaler, an influential "math education" professor at Stanford University, for decades, marginalizes traditional arithmetic that requires the memorization of math facts and the learning of standard algorithms. Under reform math, young children do not know enough arithmetic early enough, not if schools follow Common Core or common-core-derived state standards. In TKA, I fuse algebra ideas to basic arithmetic, so teaching traditional arithmetic is a curricular change (and challenge) for reform math teachers. Abstraction in algebra, I believe, is a measure of intelligence. 

"Above-grade-level testing identifies students who have the greatest need for advanced-level and fast-paced coursework." (Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth CTY)For example, students in grades 2-3 take the Elementary SCAT (School and College Ability Tests) designed for students in grades 4-5.) Many K-8 talented and gifted programs run by school districts are token programs of enrichment to please parents. Little if any above-grade-level testing is given to elementary students to assess quantitative and verbal abilities. For example, Algebra-1 in 7th or 8th grade is for average kids who are prepared, not advanced kids. Richard Rusczyk (the Art of Problem Solving) wrote the books for advanced students.  

Don't expect talented and gifted children to advance much by giving them grade-level math to pass a state test. Also, enrichment activities are not good enough, in my opinion.

In my view, a talented and gifted program that is content-free or merely provides grade-level material with comparable (grade level) extensions (i.e., enrichment) is not a curriculum for high ability learners who are often two years ahead, both in verbal and quantitative skills and knowledge, which is how the Center for Talented Youth (CTY, Johns Hopkins) screens school students for its summer and online courses. 

The CTY assessment is the School and College Ability Test (SCAT). For example, 4th graders take the 6th-grade SCAT. Middle school 7th-grade students can take the College Board SAT to qualify. Students must reach the SCAT or SAT benchmark scores. Also, many talented and gifted programs are content-free, enrichment programs for smart kids. There are many smart kids in schools, but they don't advance much in enrichment programs

Furthermore, grade-level enrichment activities benefit average and below-average students, not just smart students. (LT 1980s)

Jill Barshay (The Hechinger Report) writes, "One of the big justifications for gifted-and-talented education is that high achieving kids need more advanced material so that they're not bored and actually learn something during the school day. Their academic needs cannot be met in a general education class, advocates say." 

Furthermore, according to the National Association for Gifted Children, "Many researchers consider acceleration to be appropriate educational planning. It means matching the level and complexity of the curriculum with the readiness and motivation of the student." In short, it means acceleration. Also, differentiation doesn't work in a mixed-ability classroom. 

But acceleration is not the priority in most talented and gifted programs. Students in many so-called talented and gifted programs are taught grade-level material if that. Some students are below grade level, either in math or reading or both. (How did they qualify for a talented and gifted program in the first place?)  

"One of these current notions is that lagging groups require a lowering of existing standards so that more of their members can advance via various forms of affirmative action," writes Thomas Sowell, a black scholar and noted economist. But Sowell adds that "many lagging groups have had their greatest success--especially sports and entertainment--[and other fields that are] notorious for severe competition in which even star performers whose performance begins to decline are ruthlessly cast aside." 

The reason that so many students lag behind academically is that they are not taught the fundamentals. The teaching isn't there. High school students read Harry Potter books or graphic novels (i.e., comics) instead of Silas Marner. Academics have collapsed over the years at all grade levels, including the 1st grade. The low achievement has become the norm with "inordinate attention to processes, strategies, and [thinking] skills in the past 50 years" rather than content, explains Sandra Stotsky (The Roots of Low Achievement, 2019).  

Jill Barshay (The Hechinger Report) writes that "gifted classes may not help talented students move ahead faster. A survey shows that the emphasis is on developing 'creativity' and 'critical thinking,' not acceleration above grade level." Say what?

"Everyone is creative but not equally creative. Everyone is driven to make things better to improve their lives. Thus, original thought is merely ordinary thinking. It does not take a genius to be creative. Don't confuse creativity with the generation of ideas or a high IQ. Creativity is the act of making something better, which is hard work," writes Kevin Ashton (How to Fly a Horse).

New does not always mean Better! New is often costly! 

Kevin Ashton writes, "So do better tools always lead to better a life? Does making better things always make things better? How can we be sure that making things better won't make things worse?" The problem in education is that we often jump into new things (called innovations) that actually make things worse. New does not mean better. Often, it can mean the opposite. Most of the innovative programs in schools have failed to improve reading and math scores. In fact, over 82% of the innovative programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education have been unable to improve test scores; yet, many of these programs prevail in today's classroom. 

Lastly, Ulrich Boser, founder of the Learning Agency, points out, "Many schools of education do not embrace the cognitive sciences." Teachers are not taught the cognitive science of learning. For example, teachers have been taught that memorization and drill are old-fashioned and poor pedagogy. On the contrary, memorizing facts is a good thing! I do not blame teachers who do what they had been taught. I blame the liberal professors at schools of education who miseducate teachers, promulgate myths, and promote progressive ideas without sufficient evidence. 

Critical thinking is the product of domain-specific knowledge. 

Barshay notes, "it's revealing that three-quarters of the schools admit that they don't use a separate curriculum especially designed for gifted students in reading or math." The gifted kids are given grade-level materials to score high on the state test to raise their school's average. Jill wrongly assumes that "kids are selected for these programs because they have high math and reading scores, yet they're not given much-advanced instruction in either subject." However, in some gifted programs, many students do not have above-grade-level scores in math and reading. Indeed, some children in gifted classes are barely at grade level if that or even below grade-level in math or reading or both.

Moreover, "Teachers and educators are not super supportive of acceleration," acknowledges Betsy McCoach, one of the researchers and a professor at the University of Connecticut. "But it doesn't make sense to pull kids together to do the same thing that everyone else is doing." Suppose some of the students assigned to gifted and talented self-contained classes are below grade level in math and reading, while others are barely at grade-level, which is the case in some schools? Only a handful of students earn "highly proficient" scores on the grade-level state test in math and reading. Then again, that's grade level material, not advanced stuff. 

After critical thinking and creative thinking, "the third most common focus in gifted curricula is to give students more projects and games, so-called "extension activities" that are tangentially related to their grade-level content," writes Jill Barshay. In elementary school, math or reading/writing/vocabulary acceleration is rejected or given little notice in the gifted curriculum. If acceleration is not the primary focus, then there is little justification for most programs. 

Also, elementary school teachers do not favor acceleration because they don't know how to teach advanced mathematics. Some students in 4th and 5th grade don't know nearly enough grade-level arithmetic, such as key factual and procedural knowledge, starting with the times tables, which should have been memorized in the 3rd grade, along with the mechanics of standard multiplication and long division algorithms.

It doesn't make sense for children in gifted programs to get grade-level materials rather than an accelerated curriculum. The curriculum for many talented students is not content-driven or advanced. Talented students would be better off in honors classes than in gifted classes. There are very few honors classes in math or the language arts at the elementary school level.

Lastly, elementary school students who qualify for advanced programs from the Center for Talented Youth (CTY/Johns Hopkins) are given tests (both verbal and quantitative) at least two grade levels ahead to discover advanced and gifted students. In contrast, school districts give grade-level tests to get more kids into their program. Most of the presumed gifted students would not come close to qualifying for CTY. The CTY programs are advanced and content-driven. They are not at grade level, like most district programs. In middle school, 7th-grade students must attain specific scores on the College Board SAT, both verbal and quantitative, to qualify for summer and online CTY programs. 

Don't expect talented and gifted children to advance much by giving them grade-level math to pass a state test. Most U.S. children are not learning nearly enough math content--not even the best students in so-called gifted programs.

According to the National Center for Research on Gifted Education, "Unfortunately, currently, almost half (44%) of low-income students who are classified as high achieving when they enter first grade can no longer be classified as such by the time they reach fifth grade (Wyner, Bridgeland, & Diiulio, 2009). Why is that? The students are not taught content. Without content knowledge, there is no critical thinking. 


I gave algebra lessons to 40 1st graders for 7 hours in the Spring of 2011 and quickly found the students who managed abstract ideas faster and better than others. In short, I identified high-achieving 1st graders--most were minorities. Unfortunately, the best math students I found in 1st grade were never placed in an honors math group for acceleration. They were held to grade-level materials, which did not stress enough content.

"Content knowledge is crucial to effective critical thinking," writes Jill Barshay for The Hechinger Report.  "Critical thinking is all the rage in education. Schools brag that they teach it on their websites and in open houses to impress parents. Some argue that critical thinking should be the primary purpose of education and one of the most important skills to have in the 21st century, with advanced machines and algorithms replacing manual and repetitive labor."

"But a fascinating review of the scientific research on how to teach critical thinking concludes that teaching generic critical thinking skills, such as logical reasoning, might be a big waste of timeCritical thinking exercises and games haven't produced long-lasting improvements for students. And the research literature shows that it's challenging for students to apply critical thinking skills learned in one subject to another, even between different fields of science."
 
Critical thinking, such as problem-solving in trig, is domain-specific. You can't solve a trig problem unless you know some trig. You can't translate Latin unless you know some Latin. And, you can't work percent problems unless you know the arithmetic of percentages. You need content knowledge, lots of it. The more knowledge you have in long-term memory, the better thinking you can do. 

Gifted classes do not help talented students advance faster because "the teaching" in the classroom often contradicts scientific evidence that critical thinking is a product of knowledge. Thinking that is independent of knowledge is a myth.

What gifted and talented kids need is acceleration, not grade-level material. They need to be above grade level to begin with.
